Samsung Galaxy S8 challenges: What Apple iPhone 8 needs to beat Bixby’s mom?
The Galaxy Unpacked event in New York on Wednesday saw the release of Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8+ and raised customer expectations for the 10th anniversary Apple iPhone 8. But what can the Steve Jobs-founded company do to beat the Samsung Galaxy S8?
Samsung has brought in a lot of new features with its Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones in turn raising expectations from the upcoming 10th anniversary Apple iPhone 8.
Apple is already under the pressure of customer expectations to see some cool and useful innovations from the 10th anniversary edition.
So what can Apple do to wow customers post the launch of Samsung Galaxy S8? Here are some features, we think, that might boost the Apple iPhone dominance against the Galaxy S8, S8+:
A truly bezel-less display could steal the show
Samsung with its Galaxy S8s has pulled off something called the Infinity display which is basically more screen at the same size. The front of the S8 is 83% screen and this means tht Apple has the opportunity to build a truly bezel-less display. Simply, an end to end display -- all screen. Several reports indicate that Apple might be using OLED displays with the iPhone 8 this year, so a curved screen might also be on the cards.
The home button has to go beneath the screen
Although it would mean a copy move but Apple could manage to put the home button beneath the screen. Apple was granted a patent in 2015 that allowed the company to use ultrasound imaging to place the fingerprint underneath the display panel. The 3D Touch technology on the newer iPhones lets users control the interface without physical buttons, which means the iPhone 8 could eliminate the home button as well.
A depth sensing camera could do the trick
There are other ways to unlock the S8 by using the iris scanner and face recognition, but even Samsung admitted that the latter of the two options is not the safest. Apple could improve this feature by adding a depth-sensing camera to the iPhone 8. Aside from mapping the contours of your face, the camera could map its environment and add augmented reality capabilities to the iPhone.
The new iPhone has to be big on battery
This is Apple's Achilles heel. Apple has been trying to boost battery performance with the help of software optimisation on the iOS but has not got it quite right. Even if the iPhone isn't able to outlive the S8, it could still pioneer a better way of charging. Another Apple patent hints at short-range wireless charging capabilities that allows users to charge an iPhone on specialised tabletops, computers or even by using other Apple devices.
Price the redeemer?
This is highly unlikely but Apple may play on the price of the Apple iPhone 8 or bring in a C variant to counter the success of the Samsung Galaxy S8.
