'Titanfall' is a game of giant robots and nimble humans, but things didn't start out that way, according to a video interview with producer Drew McCoy.

'It was actually a pretty daunting task,' explained McCoy. 'We didn't even have an office for while. We were sitting around in fold up chairs just trying to come up with an idea of something that was so fun that we couldn't stop playing it ourselves.'

'[Our lead artist] created these 14 inch tall robots, which were originally supposed to be just a power suit for a human,' McCoy told an in-house video crew from game publisher Electronic Arts.

'But then one day he took a little three inch guy and sat it next to it and said 'what about this?' and that really sparked the idea that this could be quite cool.'

The game intends to fuse the sort of tentpole set piece moments found in single-player games (think 'Call of Duty') with the sort of unexpected, unpredictable dynamics woven into a multiplayer game. How will that work?

'In the campaign multi-player mode you will have something that introduces you to the level in the story of what's happening. While you're playing there will be stuff happening around you, it's all part of the story.'

'On the Angel City level you saw there's an epilogue at the end, where the losing team has to try and escape on a dropship and the winning team has to try and eliminate them.'

So even when the outcome's been decided, there's still something to play for and some fun to be had.

'Titanfall' will be the first title from Respawn Entertainment, a studio set up by the founders of 'Call of Duty' studio Infinity Ward but, despite excitement surrounding the Xbox One, won't be arriving this year.

Instead, much like 'Destiny' from ex-'Halo' crew Bungie, 'Titanfall' is tracking for release in 2014; it has been announced for Xbox 360, Xbox One and Windows PCs.
