A prototype for the first keyboard to have the Indian rupee symbol was released on August 15. Manufactured by TVS Electronics, Chennai, the keyboard is called TVS Gold Bharat, and is part of the self-produced range of keyboards manufactured by the company.

Of significance
SS Raman, managing director of TVS Electronics, says he had been approached to voice his thoughts about the rupee symbol after its launch on July 15. "I had ideas, and decided that the company should come up with a keyboard with the rupee symbol. After all, it is now going to be significant for all of us," he said.

The symbol has been inscribed on the key above the Tab button, and its positioning, Raman says, took a fair amount of research. "We had to delve into the usage of keystrokes, and learnt that Indians rarely had use of the first key in the row of numbers. So it proved to be a good spot," he said.

Font systems
Currently, the company awaits operating software to incorporate a font in their system by which the key, when tapped, will print the symbol.

'The Department of Information Technology is in talks with leading operating software developers, and we're hoping for a meeting where they make a font that supports the symbol of the rupee. Once that gets through, the keyboard should be in the market within two weeks,' Raman said. The TVS Gold Bharat will be retailed online and sold at a price of 1,495.

All new hatch
Maruti Suzuki will introduce the automatic variant of the A-star. The 4-speed automatic is expected to have a mileage of 17 kpl. The model comes with features such as a 998 CC K-Series engine, ABS, and height-adjustable driver's seat.

Website on safety
Bridgestone India on Monday launched their micro site www.thinkbeforeyoudrive.in catering to road safety. The site is a complete guide to road safety and defines guidelines to vehicular maintenance and protection. There's also a crash demo for further safety details.
