UberMoto pilot attempts to cut traffic congestion in B’luru and Gurgaon

Uber first launched the UberMoto service in Bangkok on February 23. Since that option to call a two-wheeler instead of a car has popped up in two more cities -- Bengaluru and Gurgaon -- both in India.

To deal with the problems of last-mile connectivity -- public transport to office or home -- Uber is running a pilot of the service in cities with high traffic congestion.

Uber spokesperson, Ruchica Tomar, "As a rider, you save time and money because two-wheelers are the fastest way to get around and the UberMoto is the most affordable option on the app. For cities, UberMoto helps cut congestion by reducing the time riders spend on the road, getting from one point [place] to the other."

UberMoto rides will have an added security feature besides the app features like tracking and two-way communication. The driver will have a helmet handy for your safety.

Earlier in March, Uber and Ola launched the service in Bengaluru, but received resistance from the state government. Ola soon shut down their bike-sharing service, but UberMoto continues to operate in Bengaluru while expanding to other cities with traffic woes.

Tomar told HT, "UberMoto pilot has been active in Begaluru and the response has been very good. At the end of this pilot, we'll share what we've learnt regarding the uptake and effectiveness of this cost-sharing model with the government in coming months. We are in conversations with the government and the only modification made to UberMoto is that we aren't charging any service fee for the rides in Bengaluru and Gurgaon."

Uber's cab-sharing service, UberPool was their earlier attempt to help cities deal with traffic congestion and offer cheaper rides while cutting down on emissions. With UberMoto''s pilot in early stages, only time will tell how much contribution it can make to lowering congestion and pollution.
