Fans of Indian television soap operas no longer need to check rerun timings of their favourite shows if they miss the actual telecast. They can watch the shows anytime on YouTube, which has introduced a page dedicated to TV programmes.
More than 19,000 episodes of 300 shows across six languages - Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Gujarati, and Punjabi - can be viewed on the YouTube channel. The shows have been categorised into genres such as drama, comedy, reality, fashion and game shows and the service is free of cost.
While most broadcasters like Sony Entertainment Television (SET), Colors, Imagine TV, Star India and Vikatan TV have their own channels, YouTube has consolidated all episodes on a single page: youtube.com/shows.
'We wanted to offer our Indian viewers a page to help them better follow shows they love and discover new favourites,' said a statement from YouTube on their official blog.
Popular TV shows that are already on offer for viewing include Bade Acche Lagte Hai, Balika Vadhu, Adaalat, Saas Bina Sasural, Veer Shivaji, Kya Huaa Tera Vaada, Taarak Mehta Ka Ulta Chasma and Crime Patrol.
At present, the channel has not updated all episodes of the shows. While some shows like Bade Acche Lagte Hai and Crime Patrol have the most recent episode, shows like Balika Vadhu and Veer Shivaji have episodes only till October 28, 2011, and January 11, 2012, respectively.
