WinBeta, which has been closely tracking Windows 10 installs since July the release of the operating system at the end of last month, says that the install count was only about 25 million just a week ago.

As a point of comparison, Windows 8, which was released in 2012 as sold only 200 million licenses 2 years later; Windows 7, which was released in 2009, is now used on 600 million devices; and Apple's desktop operating system, OS X, had 80 million users in 2014.

Windows 10 is free for users running Windows 7 or 8 -- a fact that has no doubt contributed to its rapid uptake. WinBeta also says that Microsoft started pushing out the upgrade more aggressively last week, which means that more devices than ever are now getting it.
