The achievements system, introduced by Microsoft in 2006 alongside its then brand-new Xbox 360 console, grant players points of various amounts when they complete a diversity of in-game tasks.
Similar frameworks soon made their way to PlayStation and Steam, increasing the perceived value of time spent playing a particular game on a particular gaming platform.
But far from turning him into a couch potato, the Knoxville, Tennessee man's eight-year quest saw him maintain a health and fitness regimen designed to keep the console athlete limber and alert.
'I can finally watch TV and movies again!' he told his Twitter followers. 'You'll sacrifice everything if you want it bad enough.'
'I can't even explain how much I put into this,' he said after reaching the 1 million mark during a live stream. 'We're talking thousands and thousands and thousands of games... but it was worth it to me. It was my passion and that's what I went after.'
'There's a lot of people out there I can thank for helping me out along the way.'
'I'll never get to 2 million,' he'd told YouTube back in August 2012. 'Never say never, but it's not as bright to me as a million. After that point, who knows?'
