Xiaomi will unveil the Mi 8 at its annual flagship event in Shenzhen, China, on May 31. However, leaks about the smartphone continue to surface online even with just two days to go for the launch.

The new flagship smartphone will succeed the Mi 6 released last year. As you can see, the company has skipped one generation by using the '8' moniker. Xiaomi says it chose the number because the upcoming smartphone performed way better than expected. It's safe to say that another reason could be to commemorate the company's eighth anniversary.

We have compiled recent leaks and rumours to form a collective roundup of everything we know about the Xiaomi Mi 8.

Display and design

The retail box and promotional images of the Xiaomi Mi 8 have been leaked online, giving us a glimpse of the smartphone's design. The biggest and most noticeable change in this aspect will be the notch cutout on the Mi 8's display. The smartphone appears to house a smaller bottom bezel as compared to its predecessor, with no sign of a home button.

The rear panel may also witness a slight change, with the dual camera setup being vertically aligned. The circular fingerprint sensor, however, sits on the same place as the Mi 6. Xiaomi Mi 8 could also feature a 5.65-inch full HD+ display with an aspect ratio of 19:9.

Processor, RAM and storage

As for specs, the Mi 8 is expected to house Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 845 processor. The same SoC powers competing flagships like OnePlus 6 and Huawei P20 Pro. In terms of memory, the Xiaomi Mi 8 could come in variants of 6GB and 8GB RAM, with storage options ranging from 64GB to 256GB.

Camera

Several leaks and rumours suggest a dual-camera setup that could be a combination of 20-megapixel sensors. Although information on camera specifics is hard to come by, reports suggest that it will be better than that of the Mi MIX 2S. Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S features 12-megapixel Sony IMX 363 sensors with f/1.8 and f/2.4 apertures.

For selfies, Xiaomi Mi 8 is said to sport a 16-megapixel front camera with f/2.0 aperture. Rumours claim that the Mi 8 will also come with a 3D facial recognition system that will be on a par with the iPhone X's 'Face ID'. A new leaked video also reveals iPhone X-like animojis, including a Xiaomi mascot that can sing the company's theme tone.

Battery and OS

As per rumours, the Xiaomi Mi 8 may have a 4,000mAh battery as well wireless charging support. On the software front, it will run its custom UI based on the Android OS. This will possibly be the upcoming MIUI 10 with Android 8.0 Oreo. Xiaomi will be announcing its MIUI on the same day, and it is expected to debut on the Mi 8.

Other features

Also spotted on the retail box was a highlighted feature called 'Dual GPS' for the Mi 8. There are speculations of an in-display fingerprint sensor for the Mi 8 as well.

Along with the Mi 8 and MIUI 10, Xiaomi will also launch the Mi Band 3 on May 31. Although rumours suggest the possible launch of the Mi Note 5 as well, it has not been confirmed.
