Zoom on Tuesday announced it will open a new technology centre in Bangalore. The company will also hire “key talents” over the next few years.

Zoom hopes the move will supplement the company's existing R&D centres. The company added that the centre will play a big role in bringing new innovations. Zoom will start recruiting DevOps engineers, IT, Security, and Business Operations headcount in the area. Employees will work from home until the pandemic-related remote work has subsided.

“The launch will also open opportunities for local talent to do meaningful work and contribute to an organization whose core value is to care for our communities, customers, company, teammates, and selves,” said the company in a release.

Zoom disclosed that the platform has seen a 6,700% growth in free user sign-ups in India between January to April 2020.

Zoom's expansion in India comes at a time when the video conferencing platform is under scanner over how it handles privacy of users. In May this year, the ministry of home affairs issued an advisory stating that the videoconferencing app Zoom was “not safe”.

Addressing a webinar earlier today, Aparna Bawa, Chief Operating Officer at Zoom Video Communications, said the company is in talks with the Indian government over the security apprehensions. “So far, we're optimistic,” Bawa said.

Bawa pointed out that Zoom is an American company and is listed on NASDAQ. She added that the company aims to provide a platform that is very safe and secure for users.

Bawa said that the company welcomes the competition. She further said that Zoom's speciality is not just the UI but several other factors such as a back-end architecture and quality. She also pointed out that Zoom has competed with larger companies and managed “survive and thrive.”
