Google is rumored to be adding LTE/4G mobile internet to its existing flagship handset.

Up to now, the rumors surrounding what Google would announce or reveal at its developers' conference in May have centered around tablets -- with many in the know predicting that a refreshed Nexus 7 is a certainty. However, news has emerged from technology news site Redmond Pie that the search giant will be launching a new, improved version of its existing Nexus 4 smartphone.

The revamped handset will get double the memory -- 32GB instead of 16GB -- and will have LTE 4G for superfast mobile internet. There's also an outside chance that it could come with the latest version of Android -- 5.0 Key Lime Pie.

The Nexus 4, built by LG, has proven itself to be one of the best and most in-demand Android handsets currently available. Its balance of build quality, price and performance, allied to the fact that it runs a pure, unskinned and unadulterated version of Android 4.2.2, makes it one of the most easy-to-use handsets this side of the iPhone. Even the HTC One, which has quite rightly received rather gushing reviews because of its design and build quality, has an interface that has confused one or two reviewers.

Google and LG have already subtly updated the understated handset once since its launch in November 2012. The device now features two tiny ridges on its back plate to stop it from sliding off tables and smashing on the floor.

By adding LTE/4G antennas too, the Nexus 4 along with the aforementioned HTC One will be serious rivals to the Samsung Galaxy SIV, which launches in the US and the UK at the end of April and according to Samsung should be on sale in 50 countries by the end of May.
