Apple AR headset's micro OLED screen is under testing phase; Made by TSMC

In case you are unaware, micro OLED tech delivers high resolution and better efficiency performance as compared to the traditional LED and OLEDs we see in most devices these days. Since the display is said to build directly onto wafers and not glass substrates, it makes the screen thinner.

We have been hearing a lot about Apple’s upcoming wearable device rumoured as Apple Glass. Adding to the list of speculations and rumours is that iPhone-maker’s long time chipset manufacturer, TSMC, will be working on advanced micro OLED screens for this device. As per a report by Nikkei, the AR headset’s in-house display initiative is still in trial mode. This means that the actual mass production is far away. This indeed means that we may not see Apple Glass coming next year as rumoured before. This piece of information aligns with what tipster John Prosser said a while ago.

"Panel players are good at making screens bigger and bigger, but when it comes to thin and light devices like AR glasses, you need a very small screen," a source said to the news website.. "Apple is partnering with TSMC to develop the technology because the chipmaker's expertise is making things ultra-small and good, while Apple is also leveraging panel experts' know-how on display technologies."

It is worth adding that the panels that are under tests, measure under an inch in size. This indicates that Apple could incorporate a waveguide system in its AR headset. This tech is used in AR glasses to route graphical information from an output source (miniature display) to multiple displays that is positioned in front of the user’s eyes.
