Apple Watch can now track your sleep in a much more detailed manner – thanks to watchOS 9. The latest software update to all supported Apple Watch models now allows users to track their sleep data in a more detailed fashion akin to the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro and other fitness focused watches. What's surprising is that it took Apple a couple of years to bring this feature to the Apple Watch that most affordable fitness trackers have been offering as standard.

Sadly, the Apple Watch still cannot track sleep on its own and it requires the user to put it into Sleep mode to do so. However, once in Sleep mode, compatible Apple Watch models with watchOS 9 will be able to bring more in-depth analysis of Sleep data, alongside additional metrics such as heart rate and respiratory rate.

Apple Watch Sleep tracking: What's new this time

With the watchOS 9 update, the Apple Watch Sleep tracking feature will now be able to measure various stages of sleep such as REM, Core, or Deep sleep, as well as when the user is awake during the sleep cycle. Apple sales this is done with the signals from the accelerometer and heart rate sensor.

“Users will see sleep stage data on Apple Watch in the Sleep app and can view more detailed information, like time asleep, alongside additional metrics, like heart rate and respiratory rate, in sleep comparison charts in the Health app on iPhone,” says Apple.

Additionally, the Sleep app still allows users to create their Wind Down and Bedtime schedules, which is synchronised with all other Apple devices registered to the Apple ID account.

Apple Watch Sleep tracking: Which models get it

Although Sleep tracking has been available on Apple Watch models for the past few years, it is watchOS 9 that brings the detailed sleep analysis to the modern versions of the Apple Watch. watchOS 9 is compatible with Apple Watch Series 4 and newer models, including the Apple Watch SE 1st Gen. watchOS 9 update is already available to download for these watch models as you read.

Additionally, if you are planning to buy the Apple Watch Series 8, Watch SE 2nd Gen, and Apple Watch Ultra, you will get the watchOS 9 updated preinstalled with these devices.

Apple Watch Sleep tracking: How to activate it

Sadly, the process is still the same as the old one.

-Your Apple Watch still cannot automatically detect sleep like other fitness watches.

-You will need to activate the Sleep mode, or enable automatic sleep schedule to track your sleep.

-Once you wake up and the Sleep mode is disables, open the Sleep app on your Apple Watch to go through all the Sleep analysis data. Additionally, you can open the Health app on your iPhone and check the data as well.
