Google Photos now lets you save images from Gmail with a single click

Ahead of the impending change that will cap users uploads to their 15GB account storage quotas next month, Google has been introducing several new features to its Photos service, in the hopes of retaining enough users on the service. The company is now adding support for a “Save to Photos” feature for Gmail that can directly save images to your collection.

Until now, receiving a photo in Gmail would display an option to download the image to your device, or save a copy on your Google Drive storage. Engadget reports that Google is now adding support for saving images to Google Photos directly, without having to save them to your computer first. It is important to note that starting June 1, Google will begin counting towards storage for all new files, mail and documents as part of your account's default 15GB quota.

The new feature could come in handy in various scenarios -- for example, if you receive photos of an event as email attachments from relatives or friends, you may want to save them to Google Photos instead of Google Drive. Instead of downloading the image from Gmail and then re-uploading the image, the new feature will save time with the option to add the image directly to your Photos collection.

Google will roll out the feature to users within the next 15 days, according to the report. So users who want to quickly save all their photo attachments to Photos before the free unlimited storage ends may not be so lucky. However, users can still export and download a copy of their Gmail data from Google Takeout, then pick the images they want and upload it to Google Photos before June 1, when the unlimited storage for all users permanently shuts down.
