Chromebooks to get Always-on-VPN feature soon

Virtual Private Networks or VPNs are one of the best ways to stay safe on the internet. While Google’s Chromebook laptops support most VPN services. What they lack is a feature that enables them to stay connected to the service all the time. But that is about to change as Google is planning to roll out a new feature that will enable users to do that simply by toggling a button.

Android Police reports that Google is working on a special feature for Chromebooks that will give users the option to stay connected to a VPN service all the time. The publication has spotted a code in the Gerrit that brings the ‘Always-on-VPN’ feature to Chrome OS. You can give this feature a go if you have a Chromebook running on the latest Dev or Canary channel build. In addition to that, you will also need a working VPN connection to use this feature.

The publication has also shared a screenshot, which displays how this feature would work. The VPN section in the Chrome OS Settings has a new VPN Preferences section. This section has an Always-on VPN toggle button. On toggling this button on, you will automatically be connected to the VPN service. This means that you won’t have to turn on the service or reboot your device every time.

The VPN Preferences section also has a VPN Service section that lets you pick the service that you want to choose, in case you have subscribed to multiple VPN services. If you are using just one VPN service, you’ll see just one option. In addition to this, you will also get a ‘Block traffic without VPN’ toggle button that will prompt Chrome OS to block all traffic unless your Chromebook connects to a VPN service, which would add another layer of security to the platform.
