Next Samsung foldable phone could have pop-up camera setup, patent application reveals

Samsung is planning to implement a pop-up camera system in its upcoming foldable phone, dubbed as Galaxy Z Fold 3. The company had planned to use this setup in the Z Fold 2, but it did not happen. Details about Samsung’s new camera system for the foldable phone were revealed in the recently published WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) application.

Filed in mid-April this year, the patent application reveals a foldable phone with a pop-up camera mechanism inside one of the two sides of the phones. The sketches in the application further show a foldable phone with Galaxy Z Fold 2-like design but without an Infinity-O cutout, reports Sammobile. The pop-up camera module rises from one of the halves of the device.

According to the report, Samsung is experimenting with different formats of pop-up camera setups. Some sketches reveal the pop-up module rising from the half of the phone that has the cover display. Others reveal the module rising from the other. Either way, the pop-up camera module is likely to replace the main rear-facing camera system. It will also help Samsung put some additional sensors on the foldable phone.

As of now, the design seems quite complicated. Considering the foldable design, it will also require proper implementation and execution to ensure the experience remains seamless for users.

That said, Samsung is no stranger to a pop-up camera module or something similar. The company last year launched Galaxy A80 with rotating camera mechanism. The setup featured 48-megapixel primary camera, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens and a 3D depth sensor. The camera offered features such as 123-degree photos and videos, 'Live Focus' shots, super slow-mo and 4K UHD video recording.
