Apple TV 4K finally gets support for 4K YouTube videos but with some limitations

Apple has finally added support for YouTube 4K for its Apple TV 4K users. Apple’s iPhone and iPad users have also received the feature. 

Interestingly enough, Apple TV 4K has been around for quite some time, but 4K YouTube videos support was announced just this year through the tvOS 14 update. Before the update, Apple TV 4K limited video resolution to 1080p even for UHD videos.

That said, Apple’s new update is not going to make Apple TV 4K users happy yet. According to reports, Apple TV 4K is limiting resolution to 4K at 30fps instead of 60fps. The Verge reports Apple TV currently supports 4K at 30fps with SDR content.

To play 4K YouTube videos on your iPhone or iPad, open the YouTube application on your device. Play a video and choose the three-dot menu icon on the top right corner.

Here, choose Quality. If available (and compatible), pick the 2160p resolution. You can follow the same process to watch the 4K content on your iPad. Note that the 4K support is available on the official YouTube app, and not the Safari browser.

To watch 4K YouTube videos on your Apple TV 4K, open the YouTube app on your Apple TV. Use the touchpad on the Apple TV remote to choose the three-dot menu icon. Here, select Quality. Just like the iPhones or iPads, select 2160p. Note that your Apple TV 4K needs to have the latest tvOS 14 update.
