Instagram testing ‘Remix’, its TikTok-like Duets feature

Select Instagram users are seeing the option to remix Reels with others.

Instagram has been working on a ‘Remix' option for Reels. It's similar to TikTok's Duets feature that lets users pair their videos with others. Instagram is now testing the remix option with select users in the app.

The new Instagram Reels remix feature was spotted by Twitter user Valerio, and later shared by social media consultant Matt Navarra. Based on the screenshots shared, the remix option is available in the menu that can be accessed by tapping on the three-dotted icon on a Reel. Among the options available there's one that says ‘Remix This Reel'. Tapping on this will open a new screen to remix that particular Reel. Instagram shows the original Reel, and the one you create side-by-side. The editing tools for Reels are also available in this remix option.

This feature has been in testing since October last year, according to a report by Social Media Today. It was first spotted by app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi who shared a screenshot of the tool's introduction. Other than the basics of remixing a Reel, the intro also states that remix creators can download your Reel as part of their remix. Instagram will also give users the option to disable video remixing for their Reels.

It looks like Instagram is testing this feature with select users. You can check if you've received by tapping on the menu button on a Reel, and look out for the remix option. It won't be surprising if Instagram launches this officially as it's been working to push Reels.
