How does Crash Detection on Apple Watch work?

According to Apple Support, as soon as the Watch detects a collision, it will make a sound and tap your wrist. If you have only your watch, the screen displays an Emergency Call slider. The Apple Watch detects crashes with the help of its three-axis gyroscope and a high G-force accelerometer. If you have a watch with cellular connection or your watch is connected to Wi-Fi, it can call emergency services automatically. You have the option to dismiss the alert or call emergency services. If you do not respond within 20 seconds, the Apple Watch will automatically call emergency services.

The Apple Watch also sends a message to your emergency contacts sharing your location and alerting them that you have been in a crash.

If your iPhone has Crash Detection turned on and is connected to your vehicle through CarPlay, the Crash Detection features (dialing emergency services) will go through your iPhone. While, if you are wearing your Apple Watch at the time of the event, dialing emergency services will be placed by iPhone but Crash Detection features will be routed through Apple Watch.
