India has witnessed a massive e-governance drive from both central and state governments over the past few years. As part of the drive, the government has digitized the issuance of e-challan for traffic violations. It helps in saving time, paper and most importantly, now people don't have to stand in queues to pay their challan. One can visit the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways echallan.parivahan.gov.in and pay their e-challan from the comfort of home. Not only can you pay e-challan but you can also check the status of your e-challan and file a complaint if there is any discrepancy. Here's all you need to know about e-challan.

How and why is the traffic e-challan generated?

E-challan is issued against traffic violations by drivers. It is generated through the Electronic Challan System that encrypts all the data of violations and transfers it to a centralized server at the Traffic Control Room. The e-challan is generated along with photo/video evidence, captured through the CCTV cameras installed on the roads. The e-challan is sent to the violators through an SMS.

Step by step guide on how to pay traffic e-challan online:

1. Visit the online portal of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways https://echallan.parivahan.gov.in/index/accused-challan.
