Google last month announced it will use your Android phone’s camera to measure your heart rate and respiratory rate. This feature will be available in the Google Fit app, and it is now rolling out to Pixel phones. Google plans to expand it to more Android phones later.

The new feature is rolling out as a server-side update, and it will be visible in the Google Fit app. Pixel phone owners will see new “Respiratory” and “Check your heart rate” cards in the app’s Home feed, 9to5Google reported. Google will use your phone’s front camera to take a video where your face and upper torso are visible in the frame. You have to breathe normally during the process, and your respiratory rate will be measured.

To measure your heart rate, Google will use your camera lens. What you need to do is to place your finger on the rear-facing camera lens and apply light pressure for around 30 seconds. If you’re in a low-lit environment you can use flash during this process. Based on the different colour changes on your finger, Google Fit will measure the blood flow. It also counts other factors such as lighting, skin tone, and age.

Google said it developed both features and also completed initial clinical studies to validate them. But the company highlighted that these measurements aren’t meant for medical diagnosis or to evaluate medical conditions. You can save your heart rate and respiratory measurements in the Google Fit app. This feature isn’t entirely new though as there are already widely available on apps that provide heart rate measurement.
