Hours before Apple gets to unveil the next generation iPhone 14 series to the world, it faces a big obstruction from Brazil – it is not allowed to sell iPhones there. Based on a latest news report, the Justice Ministry in Brazil has asked Apple to stop selling its iPhone in the country that don’t ship with a charger in the packaging box. The officials say that Apple is selling an incomplete product when there is no charger shipping in the box. The government says that this is a “deliberate discriminatory practice against consumers” by Apple.

The Reuters report says that the government has ordered Apple to stop sales of all iPhone models that don’t have a charger in the box. That includes the iPhone 12 from 2020, iPhone 13 from 2021, and all other new iPhone models that don’t have the charger in the box. Apple has also been asked to cancel sales of any upcoming iPhone models without the charger in the box. That means Apple’s entire range of iPhones won’t be allowed to sell the phones in the country. Additionally, the government has also fined Apple $2.38 million for the same.

iPhones banned in Brazil before iPhone 14 launch

Apple, however, is confident that it will be able to fight and win this decision. Apple will continue to work with the Brazilian consumer protection agency Senacon to resolve the concerns. "We have already won several court rulings in Brazil on this matter and we are confident that our customers are aware of the various options for charging and connecting their devices," Apple said in a statement.

The idea of no charger in the box was first initiated with the iPhone 12 launch in 2020, when Apple said it wants to reach its environmental goals. The elimination of charger helps Apple to reduce consumption of zinc and plastics, which reduces the carbon footprints drastically.

However, this move has also been seen as a clever way to charge more from customers. If you want to buy a new charger with your iPhone now, you have to pay extra for it. Moreover, Apple still does fancy packaging for the charger and has to ship it separately.

That’s not all though. Apple is also under pressure to ditch its proprietary Lightning port and adapt the universal USB-C port on the iPhone in the EU.
