First batch of Xiaomi phones to receive MIUI 12.5 update in Q2

Xiaomi has shared the roadmap for the rollout of MIUI 12.5 for its smartphones. 

The first batch of smartphones will receive the MIUI 12.5 update in Q2 2021. The batch includes Mi 10T, Mi 10T Pro, Mi 10, Mi 10 Pro, and Mi 11. The second phase of the rollout will cover 11 more Xiaomi devices – Mi 10 Lite 5G, Mi 10T Lite, Mi Note 10, Mi Note 10 Lite, Redmi Note 9T, Redmi Note 9 Pro, Redmi Note 9S, Redmi Note 9, Redmi Note 8 Pro and Redmi 9, according to GSMArena.

Xiaomi had formally announced MIUI 12.5 alongside Mi 11 global release on Monday. The latest update focuses on system optimisations. Xiaomi claims the update helps reduce CPU usage by up to 22%. The power consumption has been optimised by up to 15%.

Xiaomi says the optimisation is most visible in screen gestures. “In previous systems, gestures and other tasks were rendered on a single thread resulting in a queue of tasks competing for CPU usage. Naturally, under this scenario an overload of tasks could cause lags. However, in MIUI 12.5, gestures received a dedicated thread, making sure that no other tasks will interfere with them, and guaranteeing instant response,” said Xiaomi in a post.

Another feature of the MIUI 12.5 is uninstallable system applications. Xiaomi said that various apps in the new system could be uninstalled by the user while some apps that were part of the system core could be hidden.

Xiaomi’s MIUI 12.5 also brings a new feature called MIUI+. Inspired by Microsoft’s Your Phone app, the feature allows users to mirror their phone to a Windows PC.

Privacy features such as prompt when an app accesses the clipboard has also been added. Another privacy feature in the new update is the ability to send coarse location instead of the precise location.
