How can I get rid of pop-up ads?

Shoot the Messenger. Actually, something called the 'Windows Messenger Service' which has nothing to do with your MSN Messenger or other chat software, runs by default and without your consent under WinXP, WinNT, and Win2000. Pop-up ads can be broadcast to this service without needing your email id or even your browser. Download the small 22k utility, aptly called Shoot The Messenger, from grc.com and disable this service immediately, as it is also a serious security risk.
