Google Pixel 7, Pixel 6a 5G update for India delayed! This is when it could come

The Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are Google’s flagship smartphones in India but they lack one big feature – the support for 5G connectivity. 5G networks are mushrooming in India and Airtel as well as Jio have floated their 5G networks. Google had originally said that the Pixel 7 series as well as the Pixel 6 series devices will get the update that enables 5G connectivity on these smartphones by December 2022. It is already January 2023 and Google has confirmed a delay in the update release.

The Google Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, and Pixel 6a are yet to get the 5G update. Google has, however, confirmed in a statement to GSMArena that the 5G update will be released in the first quarter of 2023. Google has said that it is working closely with the Indian carriers to enable next-gen connectivity and comply better with the local regulations. The Pixel 7’s biggest rivals, the iPhone 14 and Samsung Galaxy S22 already support 5G networks.

Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro still don’t support 5G

The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are using Google’s new Tensor G2 chip that promises superior raw performance as well as better AI performance. While most of the package is the same as the Pixel 6 series, there are minor tweaks made to the rest of the hardware. The Pixel 7 Pro gets a new 5x telephoto zoom camera and with the help of software trickery, the phone can offer better zoom performance.

As for the Google Pixel 6a, this is currently the most affordable smartphone from the maker of Android. The Pixel 6a uses the last generation Tensor chip and paired with its big battery as well as a 60Hz OLED display, the phone offers great battery life. The Pixel 6a uses the older 12MP + 12MP camera setup from previous generation Pixel devices. The phone is currently on sale at a price of Rs. 34,199.

Google’s rival Apple had dropped the 5G support a month ago on its entire iPhone range. The iPhone 12 and newer models now support 5G networks with the iOS 16.2 update. Samsung’s Galaxy S22 series also supported 5G networks but without any additional software update.
