Oppo has been trying new smartphone designs and form factors lately, and we have seen it in the form of foldable phones and some patents as well. However, the company now has patented a sideways sliding selfie camera that goes from one end on the top bezel to the other.

The patent found by Lets Go Digital website was filed with WIPO or World Intellectual Property Organization and includes 33 pages detailing how the tech will work. It is indicated that the idea of having a sliding selfie camera is to capture images of the user from different angles.

And that would be done if the camera sensor is mounted on the guide block, going from one end to the other on a rail. Also mentioned is that the handset will have a tiny motor inside for sliding the camera and the movement will only take place when the user activates the selfie camera through a dedicated app.

With this, Oppo might be trying to bring some 2D images to get more 3D depth effect without letting the user actually move the device. The technology can also be applied while clicking in the portrait mode or shooting panorama group photos.

Since this is a patent, it is not for sure if this tech will ever become a reality.

Earlier this month we came across another patent by Oppo, related to the smartphone’s camera. As per the patent the company is working on a smartphone that has a unique pop up design. Posted by the World Intellectual Property Office in October last year, the patent shows that the pop up mechanism has dual sensors but none of them are facing you. At a closer look in the patent, it is seen that the pop-up module doesn't have any camera sensors at all. Instead, the two camera sensors are inside the body of the headset and are pointed upwards towards the pop-up module.
