The iPhone is getting one simple feature that has been on Android for years — haptic feedback on the keyboard. Yes, with iOS 16 update, the iPhone keyboard will now finally provide vibration feedback upon keystrokes. This feature has been long requested on the iPhone, and is now finally coming with the iOS 16 update. The feature will be turned off by default but users can enable it from the settings.

The keyboard haptics can be enabled by heading to the Settings app, Sounds & Haptics > Keyboard feedback. Given that app iPhones make use of the fantastic Taptic Engine for the vibration feedback, it remains to be seen how the haptic feedback on the keyboard feels while typing. So far, it was only Google’s Gboard keyboard that allows haptic feedback on the keyboard, and it made the experience better. However, Gboard wasn’t integrated as seamlessly as the iOS keyboard with the rest of the apps and services.

iOS 16 brings keyboard haptics

Note that iOS and iPadOS already allow the audio feedback on the keyboard. Along with the haptic feedback, the typing experience on iPhones is expected to feel more natural, just like it does on Android smartphones It is weird to see Apple waiting so long to include this feature on the iPhone, given that Android phones have been doing this nicely for several years.

Along with the keyboard haptics, Apple is also bringing the ability to unlock the iPhone in landscape mode via Face ID authentication. iOS 16 will allow users to unlock the iPhone in landscape mode with Face ID, says the latest iOS 16 feature list. However, Apple says that only select iPhone models will get this feature. Given that the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 series have the advanced Face ID system in place, it is only these phones that could be able to do the landscape unlock. The Unlock with face mask feature is only present on these iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 series devices.

iOS 16 also dropped another surprise with its compatibility. It was expected to see the iPhone 6s and the iPhone SE 1st Gen getting dropped from the support list after six years of software support. However, the iPhone 7 and iPod touch are also exempt from getting iOS 16. Apple cited no issues behind this, but it seems the iOS 16 update was too heavy for the iPhone 7’s A10 Fusion chip to handle. As a result, the iPhone 7 only got five years of updates as opposed the 6 years of updates on iPhone 6S.
