Nokia might finally launch this long-awaited 5G smartphone this year

Nokia might have a high-end device coming our way this year. Given that the company has not launched a worthy flagship device since its Nokie 9 PureView in 2019, this is exciting news. According to GizChina, Zhang Yucheng, one of Nokia’s product managers for China, has promised Weibo followers that a flagship 5G smartphone is going to be released on November 11.

Yucheng has not mentioned anything about what this Nokia device is going to include apart from the 5G wireless support. But, there have been rumours that suggest that the company has been struggling to develop a “true sequel” to the 9 PureView. As per reports, Nokia was disappointed with the poor camera quality on the Nokia 9 PureView and there were other issues on the device as well. According to ITHome, the upcoming X60 series smartphones from Nokia might include high-end camera hardware, big batteries, and a curved AMOLED screen.

Also, the Nokia 5G flagship might involve a “major software shakeup”. Reports suggest that the premium X-60 series might ship with Huawei’s Harmony OS, at least in China, instead of Android. And that is not exactly surprising given the lack of official Google services in China. We don’t expect Nokia to use Harmony OS in any other part of the world though.

This upcoming high-end 5G device from Nokia might be crucial “if and when it appears”. Nokia has recently reshuffled its phone line and the company has “largely ceded the high-end Android phone market to the likes of Samsung, Oppo and Xiaomi”. A flagship 5G smartphone from Nokia is unlikely to “topple” any of these companies but it could provide “meaningful” competition and give HMD more prestige than the low-cost phones it offers currently. 

Also, Nokia still has a handful of cult followers here who swear by the old classics, this new 5G offering could be an interesting option to lure them back into the fold. Nokia currently ships with Android OS, if and when it releases the new 5G device and it manages to make its way to India, it should to come with Android OS here as well.
