If the current crop of midrange Android smartphones feels stale, MediaTek has something to spice up the mixture. The Dimensity 1080 will now cater to the new generation of midrange Android smartphones, replacing the ageing Dimensity 920 chipset. MediaTek promises more performance and better efficiency than the older model it replaces , and it is expected to spawn new smartphones in the Q4 2022. MediaTek is yet to name the manufacturers using this new chipset.
The Dimensity 1080 brings in slight performance improvements over the 920 but is still a notch below the Dimensity 8100 that is powering the flagship killer phones. The Dimensity 1080 has an upgraded octa-core CPU with two ARM Cortex-A78 CPU cores at up to 2.6GHz, combined with an ARM Mali-G68 GPU. The chipset is based on the 6nm design which MediaTek promises to offer big gains in battery life.
Additionally, the Dimensity 1080 also comes with support for a 200MP main camera, which is handled by MediaTek’s Imagiq image signal processor (ISP). The chipset has a hardware-accelerated HDR video recording engine to process up to 4K resolution.
“Gamers can take advantage of the Dimensity 1080’s HyperEngine 3.0 gaming enhancements for speedy performance and seamless connectivity, along with the chipset’s integrated AI processing unit 3.0 (APU 3.0) for optimal power efficiency. Additionally, the Dimensity 1080 supports sub-6GHz 5G networks and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity so gamers can enjoy uninterrupted, smooth gaming wherever they go,” says MediaTek.
On the whole, the Dimensity 1080 is a mild update to the Dimensity 920 chip that powers a wide range Android smartphones in the market. That means the general performance of the chip could be more in line with the the Snapdragon 778G powered smartphones. We expect smartphones under the price range of Rs. 25000 to make use of this chip.
Prior to this, MediaTek had revealed the Helio G99 chip as a performance oriented 4G chipset for budget smartphones and tablets. MediaTek has also launched its Dimensity 9000 series chips for the flagship Android smartphones of the market in early 2022.
