Despite new rules, Apple finds way to earn commissions on every in-app purchase

The case of Apple earning commission on every in-app purchase has been going on for years now. Ever since the quarrel began with Epic Games over the Fortnite drama, several app developers around the world have pointed out local authorities to intervene and let them have their own payment systems in place. In Netherlands, the same happened and the authorities there ordered Apple to comply with an option to allow for third-party payment systems. Apple played its cards cleverly.

On its Developer Support page, Apple lists that it complies with the new rules set by the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM). Hence, it will allow dating app developers in Netherlands to have their own payment systems in place. However, Apple will continue to earn commissions on every transaction made via these third-party payment systems. Apple does not clarify how it can do so but that is the way it is going to be.

Apple to earn commission on 3rd-party payment systems

“Consistent with the ACM’s order, dating apps that are granted an entitlement to link out or use a third-party in-app payment provider will pay Apple a commission on transactions,” says Apple on its Developer page.

Hence, dating app developers can now choose which payment system they would want to induct within their apps. In Netherlands, Apple will allow them to:

1) continue using Apple’s in-app purchase system

2) include an in-app link directing customers to the developer’s website to complete a purchase,

3) use a third-party payment system within the app.

Apple says that those dating apps that continue to use Apple’s payment system will not need to make any changes. However, those adopting the newer third-party route will need to submit a new code for their apps that will be analysed and then distributed on the Netherlands version of the App Store.

“Apple will review this Netherlands-specific dating app to ensure it complies with the terms and conditions of the entitlement, as well as the App Store Review Guidelines and the Developer Program License Agreement,” adds Apple on its developer page.
