Amazon Prime Day sale is here! So are online shopping scams. Amazon Prime Day is one of the major shopping fests of the year which offers deals on top brands on several products including technology and gadgets. However, the craze around the surge in shopping events in the search for big savings is what also makes it prone to online scams. Online scammers are always in search of the best moment to bring their plan into action, and nothing can be better than this for them as shoppers are not always careful while they are doing financial transactions to pay for the products they bought. Check Point, a cybersecurity firm that works in partnership with Amazon warned online shopping enthusiasts against phishing attacks and online scams.

Shockingly, the cybersecurity firm also flagged a sharp increase of 37 percent in Amazon-related phishing emails in the first few days of July as compared to the previous month. Last year during the month of Amazon Prime Day sale 2022, the cybersecurity firm had witnessed an 86 percent increase in phishing emails relating to the shopping event. This report also mentioned a 16 percent rise in phishing URLs compared to the previous month.

How to protect against phishing emails during the Amazon Prime Day sale

  • Online phishers use a wide range of techniques in order to make the scam look like a true email dropping directly from the official source, which can look like the ecommerce portal itself. but is actually fake. And identifying such malicious emails is a real task.
  • Look out for fake domains. Fraudsters must have added some changes to the ID while retaining the real ID. Just check for those changes.
  • Phishing emails are not written by people fluent in the language, so always check if there are any grammar mistakes or sounds wrong. If you find something, then it's a warning sign of a potential phishing attack.
  • Found some unusual attachments? It can be any link, zip file or document along with the email. It can be malicious, do not click them.
  • If the email shows a sense of urgency or fear and blackmail, then beware of them! Don’t Reply, click links, or open any attachments. The best is to report the email to IT or the security team.
  • Also, ensure you delete these phishing emails.
