Snapchat Spectacles 3  (Snapchat/Edited)

Snapchat’s next-generation Spectacles will reportedly support Augmented Reality (AR). This time it will be true AR glasses with the wearer being able to view AR effects without their phone. The current Snapchat Spectacles require a phone to display what the glasses have captured.

According to a report by The Information (via The Verge), the next Snapchat Spectacles will be specifically designed for developers and creators, and not consumers. The idea is for developers to create software experiences for the device, and which can later be offered to consumers, the report added. Snap is already big on AR software and integrating that into hardware will definitely make for an innovative product. Snap’s current series of Spectacles are actually a pair of cameras for the eyes. It lets you record videos, and capture photos as well. For the AR experience you need a phone with the Snapchat app.

Snap isn’t the only company working on AR glasses. Apple has been rumoured of working on its first AR glasses for the longest time, and Pokemon Go creator Niantic has also teased AR glasses. Samsung also showcased its concept AR glasses.

The Information also reports that Snap is back to working on a drone, a project that has been rumoured for years. The report adds that Snap has invested $20 million in a Chinese drone company. But there isn’t much information on Snap’s drone project except that the company is still pushing for it. Both plans of Snap working on AR glasses, and a drone show that the company is quite serious about hardware.
