What to expect from the LG G4

At simultaneous press events around the world on April 28 and 29, LG will likely introduce the successor to the G3, the bestselling smartphone launched one year earlier. Hinting at the new flagship smartphone, the invitations to the events feature the tagline 'See the great. Feel the great.'

Setting itself apart from rival Samsung, LG is preparing to present its new flagship phone two months after the Galaxy S6 was revealed amid the excitement of MWC in Barcelona.

Early rumors indicate the G4 will offer two interface options: an expert mode with access to advanced settings for the camera and other features, and a simpler, lighter mode for general users. Like its predecessor, the LG G4 is expected to have a 5.5-inch True HD screen. The stitched leather visuals on the invitation could be a reference to a leather-covered case, which might be offered as a customization option, as seen on the Moto X.

Beyond the already innovative G3

It was in spring 2014 that the South Korean manufacturer presented the G3, which stood out mainly thanks to its 5.5-inch screen with 538ppi, a record resolution at the time. Another distinctive feature is the smartphone's 13MP camera with laser autofocus, which accurately calculates depth of field to ensure perfect focus for every shot.

LG also sells the G3s, a more affordable 5-inch version of the flagship phone that nonetheless retains certain high-end features, including the laser autofocus camera.

When launching the G3 in certain markets last summer, LG bundled the smartphone with the LG G Watch, a move that echoed Samsung's marketing strategy with the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear. It's not hard to imagine a similar offer pairing the new flagship phone with LG's latest wearable, the Watch Urbane.

LG sold 57 million smartphones in 2014 according to Gartner, ranking fifth worldwide behind Samsung, Apple, Lenovo and Huawei.
