Curiosity, NASA's robotic rover exploring Gale Crater on Mars, has captured striking images of whirlwinds of dust sweeping across the planet. The footage, which was taken in February, shows a dust devil, a strong upward whirlwind travelling above the planet's surface. Using accelerated timing and modified contrast, NASA scientists produced frame-by-frame photographs to make the movement of the dust cloud more visible. Winds play a special role structuring landscapes on Mars.
