Slack plans to add Clubhouse-like audio rooms, and Stories

Slack is planning on adding audio features similar to Clubhouse to its workplace messaging app. Slack CEO Stewart Butterfield talked about the upcoming features in a Clubhouse room hosted by former TechCrunch reporter Josh Constine.

According to a report by Protocol, Butterfield talked about one feature that is already in beta testing, and that is audio messages. Similar to audio messages on apps like WhatsApp, Slack users will also be able to record and send audio messages to others in the app. Another feature that Slack plans to launch soon is Clubhouse-like audio rooms. This feature will let Slack users join rooms and have audio conversations.

Now this may sound like having a group voice call among your Slack team members. But it will differ as audio rooms won’t require users to schedule a call or initiate one. It will most likely be similar to Clubhouse wherein users will be able to host an audio room, and others can join and leave anytime.

Slack also plans to add ephemeral video messages which is inspired by Snapchat Stories, and a feature that’s very popular on Instagram. These features have been in the works for quite some time, and they were part of Slack’s roadmap in October last year. Butterfield didn’t give specific dates for the rollout of these features.

It looks like Slack has a lot of new features planned for users. Just earlier this week it launched a new feature that lets you chat with any other Slack user. This feature is called ‘Connect DMs’, and it lets you send an invitation to anyone through their work email address and start a Slack chat.
