Online scam avoidance tips: In the latest online scam incident, a Delhi resident was duped out of more than Rs. 19,000. The victim lost the money applying for a Delhi Metro job that did not exist at all. Delhi Police have arrested three men who were allegedly involved in posting fake advertisements on various social media platforms regarding job opportunities in Delhi Metro. In reality, no such vacancies were out and these three scammers were trying to swindle aspirants. Such online scams have been on the rise recently. They post on social media and attract innocent people with lucrative offers. Ensure you never fall for such scams. Find out how to avoid online scams.

Online scam results in a man losing 19,000

In this particular incident, the victim Bhupender Singh, a 21-years old resident of Shastri Nagar came across a dangerous online scam. He noticed an advertisement on a social media platform regarding vacancy in the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and decided to check it out. After clicking the link, he received a WhatsApp message with another link which appeared to be of Delhi Metro website.

On that link, the victim was given a web form, which he filled out. On the payment page, the website asked for his debit card details for a transaction of Rs. 49 which was labeled as registration fee. After starting the process he received an OTP. As soon as he entered it, 19,049 was deducted from his bank account. Police have also revealed that they have received a similar complaint from another individual.

“During investigation, it was revealed that the accused had been running the racket from Noida. They were arrested on Tuesday,” said Sagar Singh Kalsi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North). He also added that one of the accused has admitted that they worked at call centers in Noida and that is where they learned different modus operandi to cheat job aspirants. “A total of 106 SIM cards, one Safari car, eight smartphones, 11 fake Aadhar cards were among those recovered from their possession,” Kalsi added.

Step 1:

Whenever you come across an online advertisement with a really good offer, always run a parallel Google search to know if it is mentioned anywhere else or not. If nothing comes up, never click on it.

Step 2:

In case of job recruitments, there are always official notifications released which can be found on the official websites. Always refer to them and follow the methods written there. 

Step 3:

Never follow a shady job opportunity, especially if it asks you to click on a link you do not recognize.

Step 4:

After filling the form for any job recruitment, never add your payment details on an unsecured page. Always look up the payment gateway to be sure. 

Step 5:

When you receive an OTP, do read it to know the source of it. In case you find it to be fraudulent, immediately close the link and contact officials.
