The virtual world needs heroes — men of steel, caped crusaders and masked vigilantes — to save it from the supervillains, who are out to cause mayhem and wreak havoc. And the last quarter of 2013 has seen the launch of some mega superhero games giving players an opportunity to don these capes, put on those masks and go about saving the world from one antagonist at a time.

Batman: Arkham Origins
The caped crusader returns and is on the run yet again. With Gotham City's police department still on the lookout for the vigilante, known as the Batman, and a bounty on his head drawing eight of the word's greatest assassins to the city on Christmas Eve, players can expect a lot of action in this game that released on October 25. The third instalment of the Batman: Arkham series opened to generally positive reviews, but was criticised for not improving the content from the earlier games.

The only thing better than a classic block-building Lego game is one that features superheroes and supervillains, and alternates between action-adventure sequences and puzzle-solving scenarios. Developed by TT Games, players control nearly 150 characters from the Marvel Universe, including superstars such as Spider-Man, The Hulk, Wolverine, Iron Man, Captain America, Invisible Woman and Professor X, among others, as they take on the antagonist, Galactus. Launched on multiple platforms in a phased manner from October, the game has garnered much appreciation for tongue-in-cheek humour, brilliant gameplay and engaging storyline.

Injustice: Gods Among Us

Based in the fictional universe of DC characters, this game that saw players participate in one-on-one matches, was originally launched in April with an Ultimate Edition unveiled in November. A lot of thought was put into the selection of the characters included in the game as the creators, NetherRealm Studios, wanted to create a cast with diverse skills, size and superpowers ensuring that each fighter was unique. Some of the popular characters in the line-up include Bane, Green Lantern, Batman, Wonder Woman, Raven, Catwoman and Doomsday. The game got a phenomenal reception from critics and fans alike.

The game by 5th Cell has a protagonist, a boy called Maxwell, solving riddles with some help from characters from the DC Universe to level up. Players can seek help from Superman to solve a puzzle or try to outsmart the Joker as they travel through Gotham City, Metropolis, Atlantis and other iconic locales from comic books. The game was well received.

Super Mario 3D World

The original superhero is back and this time, he finds himself in a strange new Sprixie kingdom. His mission, should he choose to accept it, is to help free these fairy-like creatures from the new villain in town. With some help from his friends and a couple of new power-ups, Nintendo's latest release is all about perfecting the game's controls to stay a step ahead. However, the reception to the game, which was launched on November 21 in Japan, hasn't been all that great with some gaming websites claiming it "had the worst debut week in 3D Mario history in Japan."
