Google app for Android testing compact weather bubble

The latest update in the Google app beta has replaced the weather card, that comes under the Search field, with a pill-shaped bubble on the top-left corner of the screen. Placed on the opposite side of the account switcher, the oval widget just features the current weather as an icon and temperature. If you tap on it you get the more detailed weather information.

Google Discover had settled on a newsfeed that caters to the user’s interest along with the sports and weather cards recently. However, this weather card is not poised to be redesigned.

This swapping a card for a ‘bubble’ is a cleaner look, for sure, but you will end up missing the highs and lows of the day, precipitation chances and your current location. 

But then, Google does give you multiple options of checking temperature and weather on your smartphone. These include the Discover feed on the left of the home screen and the Google Assistant’s new Snapshots feed which comes with a better looking card and an hourly forecast.

By removing the weather card from Google app, the Discover feed is moving more towards a list that’s dedicated to personalised stories. It’s likely that Sports will remain as a recap card for game-related content.

You can already see the weather bubble on the Google app for iOS. For Android, you can spot the new bubble on a OnePlus device that’s running the latest Search beta (version 11.11). None of the Pixel phones show this yet though.
