Microsoft’s Fluid Framework is coming to Microsoft 365

Microsoft first announced its Fluid Framework back at its annual development conference, Microsoft Build 2019, last year with the aim of giving developers the tools to develop low-latency collaborative products around its app. This year, the company is taking its developer tool a step further by bringing to Microsoft 365.

The company, on the sidelines of Build 2020 announced that Fluid Framework would be coming to Outlook and Office soon. This would enable developers to create dynamic content and connected components that can be shared seamlessly across apps.

Fluid Framework integration in Outlook for the web would come in the form of tables, charts and task lists that can be inserted into the application easily. In the case of Office.com, Fluid workspaces will enable collaborative editing.

“Within Office.com, Fluid workspaces can be created and managed, including within your document activity feed, Recommended list, and @mentions—or search for them across Office.com. And, because Fluid Framework components are lightweight, edits are instantaneous, empowering work to be fast and flexible,” Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President for Microsoft 365, Jared Spataro wrote in a blog post.

Fluid Framework will be available in Microsoft 365 in the coming months.

Apart from bringing Fluid Framework to Microsoft 365, the company also announced that it would be open-sourcing the tool and making it available in GitHub, which would allow developers to use this in their own apps.

“Along with the release of additional developer documentation and tooling, this is an invitation for developers to work alongside Microsoft as Fluid Framework is built and released,” Spataro added in the blog post.
