Highlights: Apple launches iPhone X with Face ID, wireless charging

Apple’s 10th anniversary iPhone X was the star at its event, where the company also launched the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. Catch the highlights of the event here:

Apple unveiled three new iPhones on Tuesday, including a top-of-line handset described as "the biggest leap forward" since the original iPhone 10 years ago. Apple chief executive Tim Cook announced the premium iPhone X -- pronounced 10 -- as well as a new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.

The iPhone X has an edge-to-edge screen and uses facial recognition to unlock the device, and improved "super retina" display with improved graphics and resolution.

Here are highlights from the Apple launch event:

12.24am: Tim Cook thanks Apple staff as the event ends.

12.20am: The iPhone X price starts at $999.

12.15am: Apple has introduced a new wireless charging mat. The mat charges the Apple Watch, iPhone and the AirPods. Schiller says the multi-charge platform requires a new standard, calls it "AirPower".

12.12am: Schiller says the battery on the iPhone X lasts two hours more than the iPhone 7.

12.09am: The iPhone X has dual 12MP cameras, says Phil Schiller. There's a Quad LED True Tone flash.

12.02am: Software chief Craig Federighi says swipe up to exit apps on the iPhone X. You can swipe and hold to get app-switching. To get the control centre, swipe down. Earlier users had to swipe up for the control centre.

12am: Face ID works with Apple Pay and third-party apps.

11.57pm: Face ID is the future of how we will unlock our phones, Schiller says. Face ID is used to unlock the iPhone X. It uses a TrueDepth camera system, made of an infrared camera, flood illuminator, dot projector and front camera. Every time the user glances at the phone, even in the dark, it works. The Face ID data is protected by secure enclave.

11.54pm: The Super Retina Display is 5.8 inches. It has the "first OLED great enough to be in iPhone", says Schiller.

11.52pm: This iPhone X is all screen, Schiller says. The display fits edge to edge. It has glass on front and back. The phone is made of stainless steel and glass and is water and dust resistant. It comes in space gray and silver. Super Retina Display is the name of the new display on the iPhone X.

11.48pm: Apple unveils Apple iPhone X, it's pronounced the iPhone 10, says Apple CEO Tim Cook.

11.46pm: iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus will start at 64GB. iPhone 8 price starts at $699 and iPhone 8 Plus starts at $799.

11.44pm: Apple will start selling wireless chargers in its store, including Belkin and Mophie.

11.43pm: The iPhone 8 and its glass back gets wireless charging. You can just place your phone down and pick it up for a quick charge.

11.37pm: The iPhone cameras are "calibrated for AR".

11.36pm: Schiller says the iPhone 8 has the highest quality video capture in any phone. Says the iPhone analyses two million tiles per second to predict the image and movement for better quality video.

11.33pm: The iPhone 8 gets better low light photos, more boca effects in portrait, he says.

11.33pm: iPhone 8 Plus has two 12MP cameras, new sensors.

11.32pm: The iPhones have an Apple designed image-signal processor, he says. The iPhones have a new 12MP sensor that's larger and faster.

11.30pm: There is glass on the front and back of the new iPhone that is reinforced by steel. Apple calls it the "most durable glass in smartphone." 4.7-inch display in iPhone 8 and 5.50-inch display in the iPhone 8 Plus.l

11.28pm: Apple introduces iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. The phone comes in silver, space grey and new gold finish.

11.24pm: Apple CEO Tim Cook is now talking about the iPhone. No other device in our lifetime has had the impact on our world like the iPhone, Cook says. The first iPhone changed how we interact with tech by introducing multi-touch, he says.

11.22pm: Game Company CEO Jenova Chen is introducing a new game, Sky. Sky is a romantic social adventure game. Eight players can play together from anywhere around the world. The game can be played on the Apple 4K TV, iPad and iPhone. New Apple TV 4K starts at $149, and will be shipped from September 22.

11.20pm: If you own an iPad or iPhone, there's no better choice than Apple TV, Cue says.

11.17pm: Working with Netflix to bring their 4K titles to its service, as well as Amazon Prime Video, says Cue. Apple TV app on your phone coming to seven new countries, he adds.

11.13pm: Apple TV supports industry standard HDR 10 and Dolby Vision, Cue says. Apple plays a clip from "Spiderman: Homecoming" in 4K.

11.12pm: Eddy Cue, senior vice president of internet software and services, is on stage. 4K has four times the number of pixels as HD, Cue says.

11.11pm: Tim Cook is now speaking about the Apple TV. He introduces the Apple TV 4K.

11.07pm: Apple Watch Series 3 with built-in cellular will sell at $399. The version without built-in cellular will sell at $329. Series 1 will come at $249. The new Watch will be available in stores beginning September 22.

11.05pm: Williams says the Watch Series 3 comes with a new band -- Sport Loop.

11.02pm: Williams says the biggest challenge was adding cellular to Apple Watch. The display is a multi-frequncy antenna. Apple has integrated an electronic SIM. The case for Watch Series 3 is the same in size as its predecessor.

11.01pm: For the first time on the Apple Watch, Siri can talk.

11pm: You can receive calls on your watch. It's the same number as your phone number, says Williams.

10.58pm: Apple introduces Watch Series 3. It has built-in cellular.

10.56pm: Apple WatchOS 4 updates will be available on September 19.

10.55pm: Apple is adding a feature so that Watch will notify you of an elevated heart rate when you don't appear to be active, says Jeff Williams, chief operating officer.

10.50pm: A video is being played to highlight how different people use the Apple Watch.

10.48pm: Tim Cook says today, the Apple Watch is the No. 1 watch in the world. Cook touts the 97% customer satisfaction rate.

10.46pm:The newest flagship store will open in Chicago on October 20.

10.41pm: Angela Ahrendts, senior vice president, says efforts are on to build plaza spaces in stores in the largest cities.

10.39pm: Apple CEO Tim Cook is talking about the 'spaceship' Apple Park. Says it's powered by 100% renewable energy

10.35pm: "His philosophy will always be in the DNA of Apple," Cook says.

10.33pm: "I love hearing his voice," Cook says. "And his inspiring message."

10.32pm: The event begins with two minutes of silence as people listen to Steve Jobs talk.

9.50pm: Journalists begin gathering at the Apple Park for the launch event.

9.28pm: Apple is expected to announce a new version of the Apple Watch. Previous versions of the watch had to be tethered to a user's phone in order to receive send or receive data, but the new version is expected to connect to wireless data networks just like a phone.

9.15pm: Other than iPhone X, the two other models, expected to be called the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, are intended to update the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. They could also include some new features, such as a glass back similar to the iPhone 4 that would help facilitate wireless charging.

8.55pm: Steve Jobs introduced the first iPhone on January 9, 2007. There has been unconfirmed talk that a 10-year anniversary edition iPhone X, or whatever name Apple gives it, could be priced as high as $1,400.

8.48pm: Reports suggest two iPhone 8 models will essentially be improved version of predecessors, while the "X" version will boast an improved quality edge-to-edge screen, advanced augmented reality capabilities, and facial recognition instead of a "home" button to unlock the screen.
