Minecraft just announced the Caves and Cliffs Update: Part I. This update adds new creatures, craftable items and new blocks to the game. It brings two major Minecraft creatures - Axolotls and Squids. Minecraft Caves and Cliffs Update also brings a new item - the “Lightning Rod” for wood-builders. Here's what you need to know about the lightning rod in Minecraft.

“The lightning rod does one thing and it does it very well. It'll entice any lightning strikes in a small area to hit the rod instead of its original target. The electrical energy contained within is converted to a redstone signal, and nothing catches fire,” Minecraft explained in a blog. The lightning rod is said to be useful during a thunderstorm and also if you're expecting an attack from someone carrying a trident with the Channeling enchantment. The lightning rod will divert those lightning strikes too.

How to make a lightning rod in Minecraft

You'll have to go digging to find materials to make a lightning rod. You will need a few blocks of copper ore, and the resulting raw copper should be smelt down into at least three ingots. Then you will need to stack those ingots on top of each other in a crafting grid. After it's crafted you should stick it somewhere convenient like a rooftop so you will be safe from electric strikes.

Minecraft added that lightning that strikes a lightning rod can't even summon skeleton house traps. “We felt skeleton horse traps should be a rare and exciting occurrence and constantly finding them on your roof might take the mystery out of them. That's why we decided to make lightning striking lightning rods never summon a skeleton horse trap," developer Nir "Ulraf" Vaknin explained in the blog.

So if you want to keep your house safe from lightning strikes make sure to keep a lightning rod on top. And if you haven't downloaded the Minecraft Caves & Cliffs: Part I you can do it now as it is globally available on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, and Windows 10.
