COVID-19 vaccine booster dose will be available for all adults in the country from Sunday, April 10 at private vaccination centers. The Union Health Ministry on Friday announced the vaccination drive even as fear grows over the rise of the new highly transmissible XE variant. What is a Covid-19 booster dose? 

The World Health Organization (WHO), has described booster doses as a vaccine shots administered to an already vaccinated person. The purpose of a booster shot is to restore vaccine effectiveness provided by erlier shots, but which may not be sufficient any longer. 

Covid-19 booster dose: Who are eligible? 

To be eligible for the third dose of the COVID vaccine or get a booster dose, one needs to be above 18 years of age. Also make sure that you have been administered both doses. at least nine months ago. 

Covid 19 booster dose: Price 

Apart from frontline workers, healthcare workers and the elderly, COVID-19 booster doses will be paid vaccine service unlike the previous ones. It has been made available at private vaccination centers. The price of Covid-19 vaccine varies as per the vaccine type.

The Bharat Biotech's Covaxin and Serum Institute of India's Covishield is Rs. 225 and the private vaccination centers can charge a maximum of Rs. 150 as service charge over and above the cost of the vaccine dose. This means you will have to pay Rs. 375. 

Which COVID-19 vaccine should you opt for booster dose? 

For the booster dose, one must be jabbed with the same COVID vaccine as that of the first and second dose. For instance, if you took Covishield at the time of your first and second dose, then the booster dose must be Covishield. 

How to book slots for Covid-19 booster dose online CoWIN portal? 

There is no need to register on the CoWIN portal to get the booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine as almost everybody is already registered. The beneficiaries will have to Log in to the CoWIN portal with their pre-registered mobile number to book the slot as per the availability and preferences. You can also go for walk-in registration rather than booking a slot in advance on the CoWIN portal.
