There are certain documents which you need to have in order to prove your identity and also to avail government provided benefits. These documents include, Aadhaar Card, Permanent Account Number (PAN card), Voter ID, among others. Do you have all of them? If not, you can apply by visiting the official websites for all these IDs. The thing that really makes the entire process easy is if you have an Aadhaar card- an Aadhaar Number can be used to apply for e-PAN. However, it needs to be noted that this service can only be used if you do not have a PAN but have a valid Aadhaar card and your KYC details are updated.

Aadhaar card is provided by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and is useful for obtaining benefits such as filing Income Tax Returns, creating a bank account, etc. While the PAN Card is issued by the Income Tax Department. Also, for the uninitiated, e-PAN is a digitally signed PAN card issued in electronic or digital format by the Income Tax Department.

You can know that it is mandatory to quote your PAN while filing your Income Tax Return. If you have not been allotted a PAN, you can generate your e-PAN with the help of your Aadhaar and a mobile number registered with your Aadhaar. Also, generating e-PAN is free of cost, online process and does not require you to fill up any forms.

How to apply for e-PAN through Aadhaar: Step-by-step guide

Step 1: Go to the official website of the Income Tax Department or click on the link- https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal.
Step 2: Click on the 'Instant E-PAN' option from the 'Quick Links' section available on the homepage.
Step 3: A new page will open from there click on 'Get New e-PAN' option.
Step 4: You will then have to enter your Aadhaar number for PAN allocation and tick the 'I confirm that' box before tapping the 'Continue' button.
Step 5: After this, you will receive an Aadhaar OTP on your registered mobile number. You need to provide the OTP in the required space and click on the 'Validate Aadhaar OTP and Continue' button.
Step 6: Accept the terms and conditions mentioned on the OTP Validation page and press the Continue button.
Step 7: Provide your OTP, check the box, and tap the Continue button once more.
Step 8: You then need to click on 'Validate email ID' if your email ID has not been authenticated, enter your credentials, and click the Continue button.
Step 9: You will be given an acknowledgment number once you submit your Aadhaar details for validation. You can know that the status of your PAN allotment can be checked by entering your Aadhaar number.
Step 10: To download the e-PAN, you will first have to complete the first two steps, click on the 'Check Status/Download PAN' option, provide your Aadhaar number and captcha code, tap on the Submit icon, validate by entering the OTP, and complete the procedure.
Step 11: A PDF file link will be issued within 10 minutes if the PAN allocation was successful.
