In this world full of fake news and misinformation, there is always a need for a technological helping hand in order to stop it. In such an attempt, V7 Labs, a software company that designs products to automate visual tasks, has come up with a new idea for an artificial intelligence-based (AI) software that can identify a fake profile picture or an image with 99.28 percent accuracy. This software can be accessed as a Google Chrome extension to help detect artificially generated images with ease. All you need to do is to right-click on an image and select the 'Check fake profile picture' option to detect if the image is a Deepfake (GAN) or a real person.

One of the founders of V7 Labs, Alberto Rizzoli told Peta Pixels that the new AI software is here to help curb misinformation online. “There's a lot of misleading content on social media these days and one of its propagators are fake profiles,” he explained. To solve the issue of fake profile pictures or photos, V7 Labs made this Chrome extension software which is capable of detecting whether a profile picture is of a real person or is it generated artificially via an AI. He also shared a video on the YouTube channel of V7 Labs while demonstrating the feature.

How does a Fake Profile Detector work?

Rizzoli showed in the shared video how the Fake Detector works by checking the profile picture of a LinkedIn member who recently added him. And within a few clicks, the Chrome extension software was able to identify that the profile picture of that person was actually fake! How does this happen? Well, the picture had a few indicators such as the person in the photo having an awkwardly placed earring as well as pupils that didn't look real. Not just that, Rizzoli showed another example with a new profile picture which was also able to recognise it as a fake photo.

Though such examples seem harmless, he claimed that his software is able to deal with fake news and misinformation too. He further told PetaPixel, “This Chrome Extension will help the authorities and even the common people to spot and report profiles spreading fake news and creating informational chaos, especially in the face of the Russian invasion of Ukraine(sic).”

Well, undoubtedly, this Chrome extension can be a big help to identify the fake profiles of cloning the identity of a celebrity or company on social media such as Twitter or Instagram.

You can add this AI software to your Google Chrome via this link. To detect the fake profiles, you will need to right-click the image and tap on the 'Check fake profile picture' which will identify if the image contains a Deepfake (GAN) or if it's a real person.
