Panasonic is one of the first companies to launch a 3D compact camera with its Lumix DMC-TZ20. The camera also features an amazing telephoto zoom, GPS, dual shooting modes and a host of other unique features.

The TZ20 has a 14.1 megapixel MOS sensor, which is an advanced version of the regular CMOS sensor. The main feature is the 16x optical zoom with a focal length equivalent of 24-384mm.

The three-inch screen at the back supports touch-to-focus where pictures can be focussed and clicked by tapping on any area on screen. There's a mode dial on the top for adjusting the shooting mode. There's also a dedicated button for recording videos at up to 1080p. All the buttons have a chrome finish that adds to the classy look of the camera. Build quality is solid with a part-metal and part-plastic construction.

This Lumix also has 3D photo capabilities; however, 3D pictures can only be viewed on a 3D television. GPS can be used to geo-tag pictures so you can see on a map where they were taken.

Good noise control
Pictures taken outdoors were good even at the maximum ISO setting of 1600. No purple fringing was noticed either at high ISO sensitivities. However, with the camera at full 16x zoom, there is a slight bit of colour fringing on high contrast edges.

The TZ20 didn't fail to impress with pictures shot indoors too. Pictures have a good amount of detail even in low light. Video quality on the TZ20 is above average and you can even zoom in and out while recording a video.

The battery in the Lumix TZ20 is an 895mAh lithium-ion battery that lasted for approximately two days under heavy usage. Panasonic rates the battery at 260 shots per charge, which is average.

What we like
Good high ISO performance
Spectacular 16x zoom

What we don't
Average video quality
Battery life could be better

Verdict
Priced at R 27,990, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ20 may seem expensive, but it should not be missed out on. With 3D capabilities, a phenomenal 16x zoom and GPS, this camera is loaded with
features and is a perfect
travel companion.
