Dubbed Spartan, Microsoft's new browser is positioned as an alternative to Internet Explorer rather than a replacement, according to a report on ZDNet. The software giant is expected to roll out the new browser with Windows 10.
Rather than yet another version of Internet Explorer, Spartan is set to be an entirely new product. More lightweight and user friendly, Spartan is said to look and feel more like Chrome and Firefox. To be available on PC and mobile terminals through Windows 10, Microsoft's new browser will rely on the company's in-house tech: the Chakra JavaScript engine and Trident rendering engine.
Spartan could be revealed at Microsoft's special event in Redmond on January 21, when the company will present the new consumer features of Windows 10.
Currently available in a technical preview, the latest version of Microsoft's OS will be compatible not only with the PC but with a wide range of other devices including Xbox consoles, smartphones, tablets and even connected appliances. Microsoft also plans to offer a unified, cross-device apps platform. Windows 10, which will also mark the return of the much-missed 'Start' menu for easy access to frequently used programs and files, is expected to launch in early fall 2015 at the latest.
