WhatsApp’s new features: Reverse image search to in-app browser
WhatsApp is working on new features for the app like group invitation, advanced search tool, single sticker download option and more.
Some of the features in tested are available for users through WhatsApp beta on Android and iOS. Interested users can sign up for the WhatsApp beta programme and experience new features before the official roll out. WhatsApp features on beta don't necessarily guarantee a stable release either.
Here are some features WhatsApp has been testing for quite some time, and are expected to release soon.
'Search Image' tool
WhatsApp's reverse image search is expected to help curb the spread of fake news. Known as the 'search image' tool, this feature will let users search any image shared on the app. Users can long press on the image and select the 'search image' option. This feature is in testing mode right now but it isn't available for beta users as yet.
In-app browser
WhatsApp is expected to launch an in-app browser. At present, all links when opened are redirected to the phone's default browser. Apps like Facebook and Twitter have their own in-app browsers for links. WhatsApp's in-app browser is also said to warn users if a page is infected with malicious content.
Group invitation
A feature many users will be happy with on WhatsApp is 'group invitation'. This feature will bar users from adding anyone to a WhatsApp group. The messaging app will give users options to either restrict people from being added to groups, or allow anyone, or allow only contacts. It also sends a group joining request which if not responded will expire in 72 hours.
Advanced search tool
As the name suggests, this feature will make searching for files on WhatsApp easier. WhatsApp currently allows users to search using keywords. The new feature will let users specify the file type like photos, GIFs, links, videos, documents and audio. WhatsApp's advanced search tool will also list the number of files available under each category.
Download single sticker
An update for one of WhatsApp's most popular feature is the option to download a single sticker. WhatsApp offers sticker packs for users on the app and through Google Play Store. Users have to download the entire pack even if they wish to use just one or two stickers. The new feature will let users choose the sticker they want to download from a sticker pack.
