Nreal Light mixed reality glasses launched with the Galaxy Note 20 in Korea

Nreal has launched its mixed reality glasses, the Light, in the consumer market finally. Consumers in Korea can preorder the Light, locally known as the rebranded “U+ Real Glass”, as a part of the LG Uplus network. Buyers can pick between the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 or the LG Velvet.

Bundling it with either smartphone will let you buy the Nreal Light at a subsidised price of 349, 500 won ($295), reports Endgadget. You can also buy the glasses separately for 699,000 won or $590 from the LG Uplus store from August 21.

The Nreal Light is designed with the 5G smartphones in mind so the consumer kit does not come with the Toast computing unit but it comes with a VR Cover that blocks out your view of the outside world and converts the Nreal Light into makeshift VR glasses.

The Nreal Light cannot replace the dedicated VR headsets given their 52-degree diagonal field of view (you get the same field of view from Microsoft’s Hololens 2), while most VR headsets exceed a 100 degrees here. But a 52-degree diagonal field of view is nice bonus feature to have while playing games or watching a video.

Nreal claims that the Light supports all native Android apps via its Nebula interface so theoretically you should be able to access your phone’s apps easily without taking these glasses off. You will still have to use the phone as trackpad or motion controller for now but developers soon will be able to tap into Light’s hand-tracking capabilities to pair the apps with a third-party 6DoF controller.

For those outside Korea who might be interested, Nreal told Engadget that it’ll be bringing its lightweight mixed reality glasses to other markets before the end of this year.
