Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer gave the opening keynote at CES (which was also Microsoft's last) on January 9, prompting a chorus of Microsoft-related tweets. Tweets about Microsoft hit a high of 12 percent on the eve of CES before falling to 4 percent the day after as additional companies took to the stage and stole the spotlight with ultra-thin laptops, powerful tablets, razor-thin phones and innovative new gadgets.

Tweets mentioning Motorola accounted for 2, 4, 5 and 9 percent respectively on days 0 through 3 of the Consumer Electronics Show. However, the increase of #CES tweets over the three days was largely attributed to a contest run by media company @NextIssue, which was giving away a Motorola Xoom in exchange for tweets and followers.

Samsung (4 percent), Intel (4 percent), Sony (3 percent), HP (3 percent), Nokia (2 percent) and LG (2 percent) were among the top mentioned brands at CES -- as was Apple (1 percent) despite the fact that the company did not have a booth or showcase products at the event.

When it came to buzzed-about technology, OLED (organic light-emitting diode) was the most discussed innovation throughout the show with 2,099 tweets mentioning it.

Ultrabooks stole the show during the first couple of days during which HP unveiled the glass-topped Envy 14 Spectre, Acer took the wraps off its Aspire S5, Dell showed off the XPS 13, Lenovo announced the Yoga and Samsung revealed its revamped Series 9 ultrabooks.

Online chatter about CES shifted to talk about tablets and gaming on the third day of CES but could not be matched by the number of tweets still mentioning OLED.

'Tablets and gaming have both surpassed ultrabooks as the hot topics of the show. And while it's losing momentum, OLED is hanging on to the number one spot,' said Simply Measured.

Additional buzzed-about CES trends according to Simply Measured included audio, HDTV and laptops.
