UPI or the Unified Payments Interface has become the lifeline of financial transactions in India. UPI enables users to transfer money from one bank account to another using smartphones seamlessly within seconds. Most e-wallets and payments platforms in India including Paytm, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, WhatsApp Pay, and banking applications feature support UPI payments, which enables their customers to transfer funds quickly and easily. All of these services and others use apps that utilise this platform for transferring money from one bank account to another. But that is not the only way funds can be transferred using UPI.

How to send money using UPI without Internet

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has devised a technique that doesn’t require any mobile application to transfer funds using UPI. The technique called USSD 2.0 enables mobile device users, even the ones who don’t have internet connectivity to transfer money using UPI. USSD 2.0 uses a dialing option -- *99# -- to provide this facility. While there is no app interface, transactions are made possible via an interactive menu displayed on the mobile screen.

Key services offered under *99# service include sending and receiving interbank account to account funds, balance enquiry, setting or changing UPI PIN besides host of other services. *99# service is currently offered by 41 leading banks and all GSM service providers and can be accessed in 12 different languages including Hindi and English.

    Features of *99# Service

-- It uses USSD as the access channel that works across all GSM handsets.

-- It supports menu-based applications that are easy to maneuver for the users.

-- It does not require data connectivity.

-- It is available round the clock.

-- It is accessible through a common code *99# across all GSM operators and mobile handsets.
