According to tech blogger Medgadget on Tuesday, Google Body Browser, a Google Earth-esque tool for the human anatomy and part of the now-defunct Google Labs project, will be relaunched as a free Android app and web application called Zygote Body.

Last December, Google soft-launched the Body Browser program, which allows users to examine the human body in fully layered, three-dimensional detail.

Medgadget reports that while Zygote is releasing its own application that builds off the Body Browser, Google announced that it also plans to open source the code for Body Browser and make it available for free to developers soon.

Designed as an educational tool for doctors and med students, the program allows users to see detailed views of human anatomy, such as muscular structure, organs, arteries, veins, and eventually just the nerves. When a user clicks on the 'Labels' option, the program transforms into a virtual biology book, providing detailed notes on every part of the body you are viewing.

While the layperson might enjoy playing doctor with the new app, the tool is meant to serve as an alternative to the static sketches of Gray's Anatomy or pricey (albeit much more dynamic) 3D anatomy software programs such as Primal Pictures or Visible Body, which can cost as much as several hundred euros for just one part of the body.

Mobilehealthnews reports that the new app faces stiff competition from the 242 anatomy apps available for download in Apple's AppStore as of this July. Dates on its release are not yet announced.
